Mastercard and x402: How Close Are AI Agents to Paying on Their Own?

Mastercard recently demonstrated an agent payment flow built around Agent Pay and x402. An agent can discover a service, accept terms, receive a 402 Payment Required response, create a payment credential, and settle through card or stablecoin rails.nnThat does not solve authorization, refunds, fraud, taxes, merchant liability, or key leakage. The useful product is not an agent with an unrestricted card, but a revocable budget with purpose, merchant, time, and human-escalation limits.nnMachine payments will likely start with small, repeatable, verifiable API and digital-service purchases. The real inflection point arrives when budgets, refunds, identity, and liability are standardized.
